Upon hearing the will, Priya froze, knowing she alone had cared for her gravely ill father for the past five years…
The day their father passed away, the small house overflowed with relatives. Everyone knew he was a strict and fair man, so when the will was opened, no one dared to whisper a word.
The lawyer held the paper, slowly reading each line:
– “The eldest son – Rajesh Sharma, shall receive two property deeds for the house and land in the village.
– The second son – Sanjay Sharma, shall receive two savings accounts totaling ₹15 crores.
– As for Priya… I give her one gold coin; after all, she is a daughter and is about to marry, so consider it part of her dowry.”
The entire family fell silent for a few seconds. And Priya – the frail daughter, her eyes red from countless sleepless nights – felt utterly numb.
Their father had been bedridden for five years. Their mother had passed away early. Both brothers had moved away for work, returning only for Diwali. From changing his bedpan and feeding him porridge, to administering medicine and rushing him to the hospital on nights when he struggled to breathe, she, the only daughter, did it all alone.
She had quit her job in the city and moved back to the village permanently, without a husband, children, or friends. There was only her father, his sickbed, and the smell of disinfectant…. Seeing their only sister so forlorn… the two brothers decided to do something that earned the respect of the entire village… (continued below).
…the two brothers stood up, walked towards the lawyer, and declared loudly:
— “We respectfully decline our share of the inheritance.”
The room was shocked. Aunts and uncles whispered, older relatives dropped their tea cups with trembling hands. As for Priya, she looked up, her eyes wide, unable to believe her ears.
The eldest brother, Rajesh – who was typically a man of few words, often perceived as cold – walked over and held his sister’s hand:
— “Father was a strict man, but also… stubborn. All his life he believed a daughter gets married and that’s the end of it. But in his final years, if it weren’t for you, he wouldn’t have lived to see today. So, this share… it rightfully belongs to you.”
The second brother, Sanjay, continued, his voice choked:
— “₹15 crores, land, property deeds, none of it compares to the five years of your youth you sacrificed. I apologize for not being there. But now, at least let us do the right thing.”
He turned to the lawyer:
— “Please revise the will, and divide it fairly. If possible, I request that my entire share be transferred to Priya.”
Priya burst into tears. All the resentment, all the sleepless nights, the bitterness she thought she had swallowed whole… now dissolved with each tear.
The villagers standing outside, listening to the story, nodded in unison without a word being exchanged:
— “This family is truly blessed. A daughter like Priya, and brothers like that… how many are so fortunate?”
