The incident happened on Saturday morning, when preparations for the royal bath were at their peak at sunrise. Then people’s eyes fell on a 5–6 feet long, dark black snake, which suddenly appeared crawling on the banks of the confluence of Ganga-Yamuna.

He was neither aggressive nor afraid. Rather, his actions looked as if a meditating yogi or ascetic had come to take a bath in the Ganga. He stopped for a few seconds, spread his hood, and then slowly merged into the Ganga.

🛕 Sadhus and Saints React: “This is not an ordinary event”

Sadhus from several prominent akhadas present at the scene described the scene as an ‘auspicious sign’ and ‘divine presence’.

“The appearance of the Naag Devta in this form in the Maha Kumbh indicates that the grace of the gods is especially showered on this Kumbh,” – said Mahamandaleshwar Avdheshanand Giri Ji.

Some sanyasis also claimed that the incident is a sign of the presence of Lord Shiva, as the ‘Naag’ is considered to be Shiva’s jewel.

“The arrival of the Naag in the Kumbh of Mahakal is not an ordinary thing. It is a symbol of Shiva himself,” – said a senior saint of Niranjani Akhara.

While on one hand saints and devotees are considering it auspicious from the point of view of faith, some people also got frightened. Many devotees, especially women and children, were seen running away from the ghat in panic.

The local administration had to immediately deploy additional security forces to handle the situation, so that rumors could be prevented from spreading. The forest department team confirmed that the snake was not poisonous, and had probably strayed from the forests.
