Her husband, Rajesh, suffered a spinal injury in an accident, leaving him completely paralyzed just five months after their wedding.
Her name was Meena, and she was only 22 when her world crumbled. Her in-laws’ family was poor, and her husband’s parents passed away one after another. Everyone thought Meena would leave and marry someone else. But she didn’t. She stayed, working odd jobs during the day, and in the evenings, she would clean him, feed him porridge, and empty his bedpan.
The entire village pitied, cherished, and admired her.
However, in the 12th year, on the 5th day of Diwali, Rajesh passed away peacefully in his sleep. Meena quietly arranged a simple funeral, allowing no one to pay their respects, not even close relatives. She just sat beside her husband’s body, her face eerily calm. Only one person was allowed into the house where the coffin lid was slightly ajar: a young man, about 19-20 years old.
The whole village whispered. They began to suspect. Someone blurted out: “Could it be that she’s been unfaithful all these years? Is that boy her secret son?”
But when the coffin was carried away, Meena finally stepped out, holding a faded, yellowed piece of paper and an old mobile phone. She turned on the speaker, playing a recorded message — Rajesh‘s voice, trembling and weak:
“Meena… can you hear me? You don’t have to live your life for me anymore… He is a poor student, I once asked you… if you have feelings, then go to him… Don’t feel guilty… Thank you, my love, for this entire life.”
Everyone was stunned.
She explained — the young man was a medical student, whom she had hired to care for her husband on an hourly basis from the sixth year onwards, as her own strength began to wane. She didn’t know when, but they developed feelings for each other. But her husband knew — and quietly accepted it, even thanked her. “I did not betray him. I lived honorably — with both men who loved me with all their hearts.”
The funeral ended in silence. No one uttered another word.
A month later, people saw Meena leave the village. But this time, it wasn’t in despair or flight… rather, she gently moved forward — with the young man her husband had entrusted her to.
